Sidewalk Mosaic Scavenger Hunt

Orpheum Mosaic

If you’ve spent any time in the last week wandering around downtown, you may have noticed a new addition: a set of mosaics created at various street corners. Having endured the plagues of orcas and spirit bears over the last couple of years, I was at first skeptical about this arts initiative, but having seen the mosaic this morning at Seymour and Smithe, in front of the Orpheum Theatre, I can definitely say that they’re attractive and interesting.

I haven’t had a chance to see the others yet, but thought I’d ask for help in doing so. Comment here with links to your photos (Flickr or elsewhere) of at least one of the mosaics, and in a followup post, I’ll include the best photos in a mosaic of mosaics, crediting each person involved.

To save everyone some wandering around, here are the locations of the 8 mosaics so far, courtesy of 24 Hours.

  • Seymour and Cordova
  • Robson and Burrard
  • 700 Seymour
  • 401 W. Georgia at Homer
  • 925 W. Georgia at Hornby
  • Orpheum Theatre at Seymour and Smithe
  • Vancouver Art Gallery near Georgia and Howe
  • Burrard and Dunsmuir

There’s actually a total of 12 of these mosaics. They were on display for a while at the Park Place building downtown at 666 Burrard across from the Granville Skytrain Station.

I’ve only seen the 8 mentioned in 24, the other 4 I haven’t seen yet although there’s a few locations on some streets I’ve walked by that suspiciously have a square sidewalk piece marked off. (or it could be just an installation of a fire hydrant or something)

If anyone knows of the other 4 I’d love to find them.

Apologies for some of the crummy photos, I’m not using my regular camera and I was a bit shaky.

Download warning for anyone on a modem here’s the 8 so far:

Here’s a photo I took of a tile mosiac located at Hastings and
Cambie. Not sure if it’s one of the ones you’re talking about.

that’s the one across the street from victory square? it’s been there at least since January, I saw it then (my mom was making me wander around looking for Dressew so we could get goodies for my wedding). i suppose these are permanent fixtures now… yeah, i mind them much less than the orcas/bears

Actually strangely enough I don’t think the picture of the mosaic I have at Richards & Cordova is part of this particular project. Nor is the one posted by Dustin.

Here’s the 12 mosaic pieces…from the looks of it one might be around the Commodore.

Spanning Time (the one with the LGB) is my favourite.
