Harry and the Potters: Voldemort Can’t Stop the Rock

We’re going to play some songs about sticking it to the Man! Do you guys know about the Man? Where I come from, the Man, he’s the person that goes to your parents’ house and kills them and puts a scar on your forehead! But you can’t let that sort of stuff get you down. You got to stick it to the Man!

The Battle of the Wizard Bands at the Library Square downtown on Saturday rocked.

Harry and the Potters: Save Ginny Weasley

Draco and the Malfoys opened with both Muggle classics like 99 Death Eaters and their own originals like Hippogriffs Must Die. Their Slytherin house membership didn’t seem to affect their popularity with the crowd any. But it was Harry and the Potters who were the real fan favourites, opening with a call to stick it to the Man, and with songs like Voldemort Can’t Stop the Rock and the ever popular Save Ginny Weasely.

Ordinarily, I wouldn’t have attended this concert–boy bands aren’t to my taste in music. But the price was right, and the literary and fantasy tie-ins, not to mention the sheer nerd chic of the project as a whole struck a chord with me. I enjoyed myself immensely, even just standing on the outskirts of the crowd. But the audience crowding around the stage (largely female, largely young to very young, decked out in Hogwarts ties and scarves), they had the time of their lives: they danced, hopped, moshed, they cheered, sang along, waved their arms in the air. Great, infectious fun for everyone, including the performers, who seemed to have a great time too and mingled with the crowd after their sets.

If you missed them, you missed a great old fun time. But chances are they’ll be back next summer.

That’s one kewl recording of 99 Death Eaters. A bit grim but well performed indeed. Were there any performances by the Order of the Phoenix? Any recordings of that?
