Not Canadian Idol. . . . Not American Idol. . . .

It’s Bhangra Idols! [bi]

Bhangra Dancers

This Saturday, September 23rd, at the Orpheum, ten teams of Bhangra dancers from all over North America will compete to find out who can really claim they’re the best in the land.

Not sure what all this is about? Bhangra is a style of pop music and accompanying dance style which originated in the Punjab region of India. It’s lively and upbeat, and lends itself well to fusion with other styles of music, including Western pop, disco, house, and hip-hop. In the last few years, its popularity has been sweeping through the ranks of young Indians and non-Indians alike. (see wikipedia article, and AllMusic Guide article).

Tickets are still available through the website for anyone interested in seeing some unprecedented spirited shoulder shaking and fancy footwork. If you’re not dancing along by the end, you’re officially joyless.

It was a fantastic event! The infectiousness was such that I even secretly bhangra danced around the living room this morning.
