Playstation 3: the lines have begun

If you were planning on buying a Playstation 3 tomorrow then I’d suggest it’s too late. There’s lines already outside of local stores, the Robson/Granville Street Future Shop has a line that’s at least fifteen people deep. Most stores aren’t even going to get enough systems to cover their pre-orders because Sony couldn’t manufacture themselves out of a wet paper bag.

A lot of pre-orders have been cancelled. Best Buy (who also owns Future Shop) cancelled all of their pre-orders [eg]. Online retailers have cut their orders in half, so if you’re not already in line then you’re probably out of luck.

Besides the XBox 360 is already out, won’t be that much different and is way cheaper. Plus Sunday’s release of the Nintendo Wii is the really exciting event.

My brother reports that the Best Buy at the south foot of the Cambie bridge had a line half a block long Thursday morning!

You can think of the PS3 shortage three ways:

    1) Sony can’t keep up with demand
    2) Sony is offering it for sale before production is fully ramped up
    3) It has deliberately been offered for sale before production could be ramped up to ensure the buzz of a day-one sellout.

None of these is an illegitimate reason to be short of consoles, but it suggests that as with virtually all recent console releases, you just have to regard “next March” as the real release date. Anything between now and then is a bonus.

    1) Well true in a sense.
    2) Yes.
    3) No.

Sony was just so behind the ball and kept pushing back the release date. They wanted it out before holidays ’06 and had to get it out on the street before the 360 had a year + advantage and the Wii had the holidays.

Now at least people who can’t buy a PS3 might wait until March, as opposed to going with a 360.

My brother’s pre-order of a PS3 from Zellers which he waited in line for 13 hours for was cancelled today, and too late for him to line up at a store that’s getting more so he’s out of luck until March.

The Wii looks so much cooler anyway. I’m not much of a console gamer, but I’m tempted to buy one if there aren’t supply shortages.

I just hope none of the guys that are standing in line from smashmyps3.com, though I’d love to see the looks on the faces of the line-goers as someone smashed a brand new PS3 to pieces in front of them.

They pulled the stunt in another city, I think maybe Toronto, and the video was damn funny!
