The Hybrid Jersey

You gotta hand it to the Canucks organization. They were able to create hype ALL summer about these new uniforms and also managed to get almost 10,000 people to GM Place, mid day, during the week, for the unveiling of the new jerseys.

Early reports from the blogosphere note how “busy” and “cluttered” the jersey is. Honestly, I love the colours, I don’t mind the orca logo, and I like the words “Vancouver” across the front – which is sort of the throw-back to the Millionaires’ days. But put them all together? And yeah, slightly less than impressed. You know what though, they could be worse. I’m just ready for the puck to drop this season, I’m seriously missing hockey this summer.

i was/am so relieved. You’re right; it could have been so much worse and like another Halloween costume.
Really, what more could one do? What would you do? C’mon, what would your design look like?
We need it to be blue….theres no other choice there. Would you rather it be yellow, orange, black, brown… i mean think about it! We need it to have the whale. Well, don’t we? What else could it be; a beaver? a fish? a bear? an eagle? Nope. The green because BC has green trees, forests, and mountains…..hey now theres a thought….it could have been purple to indicate our mountains….! But then what about our ocean? Nope. I don’t think anybody can hate this design and colour. Its absolutely perfect. OK we’re ready now, lets play hockey. Go Canucks go!

I think they really took the mash-up route and ended up with a Frankenstein. I’m actually not against it, but it’s not quite great. I actually like the colours of last year’s shirts more, and if we’re using the old symbols I would have made three versions (home, away and alternate).

Home: A shirt with the stick logo in last year’s colours

Away; A white shirt with the Orca in last year’s colours.

Alternate: A blue green shirt with “VANCOUVER” across the front.

One of the reasons I and others like the retro jersey, which sells about as well as the main jersey, is that the logo is great. The colours are good too, but secondary to the really good logo.
