Dine Out Vancouver 2008

Dine Out at Cassis Bistro ($25)

That’s right, it’s a new year and that means the Dine Out Vancouver menus are up online [tv] and it’s time to get your eat on. For those of you playing a long at home Dine Out Vancouver is a program by Tourism Vancouver where a number of local restaurants offer reasonably priced set menus (between $15 and $35) for a few weeks to give locals, tourists and others a chance to taste their fare, while bringing in business for restaurants during their slower post-Christmas period.

This is the program’s sixth year, and every year it gets more and more popular. I’d suggest getting reservations as soon as you can, especially if there’s somewhere specific you want to eat. Lydia’s already got a whole host of eateries booked for us, and she was online the day the menus came out to make sure we got to go where we wanted.

For our past bits on Dine Out Vancouver just check here [mbv]. From personal experiance I’d suggest Aurora Bistro [mbv] and Raincity Grill.

Dine Out Vancouver runs from January 16th until February 3rd.

Note: The menu pictured is from last year, please check the website for an updated Cassis Bistro menu.

I dislike Dine Out Vancouver. Or maybe just set menus in general. (I also like all-inclusive resorts, preferring to stay in a hotel and choose my own restaurant for every meal.) Mains at Cassis range from $14.50 to $19.50. So I can go there any night I want (thus avoiding the hassle of calling to see if they have “Dine-Out” spots available) and choose from among 7 mains along with an appetizer (for about $10. yeah, those ones on the set menu aren’t normally available but they are probably tiny, and worth about $5). Then throw in a dessert (if I want) at $5-$6.50 for a dessert comparable to the ones on the set menu. The baby spinach salad sounds great, too bad it’s not on the set menu.

So Dine-Out makes very little sense to me. With the standard menu I can get more selection for roughly the same price (or more, or less). If I was going to Cassis I would get a main for $14.50-$19 then add-on the baby spinach salad for $13.25 (’cause I love salad). That’s $27.75-$32.25. Worst case that’s 29% more than the set menu but I get what I want: a salad that I want instead of a small appetizer and dessert (which I don’t want). And I get to choose among 7 mains.

Some of the top restaurants in the world only offer set menus. The French Laundry and Alinea, for 2 examples. Anyway, it’s not like all the restaurants in Dine Out offer great value (I doubt anyone’s lining up for The Old Spaghetti Factory), but for the ones that do, it’s great bang for your buck. I could never ordinarily eat at Raincity Grill.
